Engines and other power equipments experience a lot of friction happening between the surfaces inside them. People usually do not notice this because the effects are not visible until the machines start showing it by not working properly.

Lubricants are available in grease form, powder form, Teflon tape and many more. Graphite, tungsten disulfide and molybdenum disulfide are examples of dry lubricants that work just fine even if exposed at temperatures as high as 350 degrees Celsius.

Why should we use lubricants?
Lubricants perform a lot of functions that would make industries save a lot of money. Like what I mentioned earlier, they reduce the friction between two surfaces and make sure that parts that are supposed to move are kept moving. They transfer heat and eliminate debris and contaminants. They also transmit power. They provide protection against wear and tear and corrosion too. They remove the risk of producing fire or forming smoke in objects.

High-temperature lubricants are probably a good example to demonstrate how lubricants can stop fire and other dangerous stuff from happening. This particular type of lubricant is used in jet turbines, which are operated at high levels of temperature. It is able to overcome the difficulty of doing its job even at above normal temperature and keeping the pumpability temp to a minimum.

Lubricants can be classified into solid lubricants, gas lubricants and liquid lubricants (which include suspensions and emulsions).

Solid lubricants are also considered as dry lubricants. They are categorized into three, namely PTFE or Teflon, metal or alloy, and non-metals. Teflon is used in many cooking utensils because of its ability to make a surface non-stick. It operates at temperatures not greater than 350 degrees Celsius. Non-metal lubricants like molybdenum disulfide, graphite, tungsten disulfide and hexagonal boron nitride are used in operations that require hot temperature. However, they have poor oxidation resistance. Metals and alloys like zinc, tin, gold, cadmium, bronze and lead are used plating and as slide bearings.

Gaseous lubricants have high compressibility and low viscosity in comparison to liquid lubricants. Some examples are technical gases, liquid-metal and steam vapors. Liquid lubricants are often oil-based like lanolin, synthetic oils and mineral oils.

What is nickel?

Nickel is a versatile metal, a chemical element, with an atomic number of 28 and chemical symbol Ni. It is lustrous and often silvery-white in appearance. It is a ferromagnetic element that can exist in room temperature. There are only three other elements that possess the same characteristic: gadolinium, iron and cobalt.

How was nickel discovered?

It is believed that man has used nickel as early as 3500 BC. However, it was only in 1751 that it was classified and recognized as a chemical element by Swedish chemist and mineralogist Axel Fredrik Cronstedt who, at first, thought it was a copper mineral. Since then, important nickel ore minerals have been discovered, such as limonite, pentlandite and garnierite.

What are the properties of nickel?

The properties of nickel are divided into atomic, physical, isotopes, and chemical. Its atomic properties include its electronic configuration, electron structure, and other electron-related stuff.

Its physical properties include its color (which is silvery-white), magnetic abilities (like what was mentioned earlier, it is among the four elements that have magnetic abilities at room temperature, but is non-magnetic when exposed to temperature greater than that), and unit cell structure (nickel has a face centered cubic unit cell). It is also ductile and hard.

Nickel has five stable isotopes, each of which has a unique set of properties and characteristics. And when we speak of nickel’s chemical properties, it occurs in several oxidation states. The most common among them all is +2.

Where is nickel used?

A lot of industries today make use of nickel in their operations. Some of the products that use nickel are rechargeable batteries, stainless steel, coinage, electric guitar strings, magnets, nickel alloys and other types of alloys, including bronze, copper, lead, silver, gold, cobalt, aluminum and chromium. It is also used to make nickel cast irons and nickel steels.

Nickel alloys are commonly used in power plants, gas and oil plants, and other processing factories. They are good at corrosion resistance and heat regulation. They are also utilized in nuclear reactors and solar engineering. In our household, nickel alloys are found in our electrical heaters, cookers and other appliance.

Graphite is a mineral that is considered to be the most stable carbon form there is. Because of this distinction, it is used as like the basis when figuring out the heat of formation of different carbon compounds. It is among the allotropes of carbon, which also includes diamond, amorphous carbon, lonsdaeleite, buckytube, and three more.

Natural graphite comes in three principal types:

1.	Amorphous graphite – this type is the product of coal’s thermal metamorphism. It comes in the form of fine particles. It is also known as meta-anthracite.

2.	Flake graphite – this type is also called crystalline flake graphite. It is often flat and has hexagonal, angular or irregular edges.

3.	Vein graphite – this type is also known as lump graphite. It looks like a huge mass of fibrous crystalline aggregates and is often found in fissure fractures and veins. It is believed to be produced hydrothermally.

Graphite has several properties that make it distinguishable from other minerals and alltropes of carbon. First, if you look at its atoms in a microscopic level, its atoms form a hexagonal lattice with a fixed distance between the planes. Second, it is capable of conducting electricity because its carbon layers are highly electron delocalized. Third, it has thermal and acoustic abilities. Finally, it has impressive dry lubricating and self-lubricating characteristics, making it in demand in many industries.

Graphite may be natural or synthetic. Natural graphite is commonly used to make steel, rafractories, expanded graphite, foundry facings lubricants and graphite lubricants. Synthetic graphite, on the other hand, is often used in electrodes, neutron moderator, powder and scrap, and RCCs or reinforced carbon-carbon products, such as gold clubs, pool cue sticks, fishing rods, and bicycle frames.

All over the world, there are many graphite mining pits and areas. In Sri Lanka, there is an underground location where lump or vein graphite can be mined. Machineries and equipment like bulldozers are used to dig through the ore and extract the graphite.

To be able to acquire graphite and manufacture it to create various goods, different methods and techniques are being employed. Of course, tools and machines are also a must to make everything easier and faster

The main use of graphite lubricant is to change the way that metals and other materials work when applied to other metals. Typically, it is used for tools, hardware and accessories that have heavier metals or materials. If the lubricant isn’t applied, then a larger amount of friction may occur between two materials. As the friction is created the materials wear down at a faster rate and won’t function at the proper level. Other types of materials may also become rusty, which will cause aging and dysfunction of the tools.

When you begin to look for different types of graphite lubricant, you will notice that they come in different forms. The most common is a liquid type material that can be applied to different materials. You can also find powders that are commonly used for those that are using metals and tools. The difference between these two is based on the ability to measure against temperature fluctuations. The liquid is able to support higher temperatures without melting and has different ratings when in dangerous situations, such as with heated areas.

The graphite lubricant that you use works on your tools or accessories as a protective shield. As the graphite is sprayed onto different materials, it will stick to the metals in small flakes. The materials will layer one over the other and will shield the tools or accessories that you are using. When friction is applied to different movements, the layers of the lubricant will respond by lessening the amount of friction and working as a grip. The use of flakes combines with this to create little resistance and a strong shield while working with different types of movements.

Whether you are working on automobiles or are building a specific project, is the ability to work more effectively with the right tools.
A common approach that is used for the materials is known as sheet metal bending. This process creates a solid design that can be used for several industries and which provides a stronger base for any part or design that you need.

The concept of sheet metal bending is to create metal that is moved in different designs and shapes. The procedure that is used is most common for roofs of buildings, air ducts or electronic enclosures. The bending process that takes place is dependent on the industry that you are working in and is also altered dependent on the type of sheet metal that is used. Each of these will create a different level of stability for the area that you are in and will alter the process that is used to create the right designs.

To begin working with sheet metal building, different calculations have to be used. The calculations will create a difference in the amount of air pressure and compression that is a part of the procedure. This will also make an alternative process used for the heat that may need to be applied for the sheet metal.

The first part to this calculation is based on the thickness of the metal. If it is thicker, then more air compression will need to be used to force the right shape of the metal. There is also a certain amount of allowance that each of the metals have when creating the right shape. Distances from the center of the metal and the degree of the bend will also make a difference in the end results of the shape and design.
Each of the processes and calculations that are used for sheet metal bending combine with alternative shapes and designs that can be used.

If the material is thinner, then shapes that fold or create three points may be used. Thicker materials may not be able to provide the same, flexible shapes, dependent on the considerations used for the materials and the degree of the bend. Considering each of the angles of the metal then leads to a different look and design that is used for the end shape of the metal part used.

The process of sheet metal bending is one that can help with different transportation or building needs. The use of this particular metal and the ability to create the right effect from the bending leads to an alternative look and design. No matter what industry you are in, you can look into the procedure of sheet metal bending to get the right stability for the parts you need.

The basic definition of this procedure is to form metal into a round or cylindrical shape. The process of spinning is used to ensure that the right formation and design occurs while creating a different production of designs.

There are two main types of procedures that are used for metal spinning, all which are dependent on the complexity of the design used. The main process that is required is one that places the metal on a mandrel or a shaped material. The metal is clamped on both sides of this formation to begin the work. The metal will then be spun at high speeds, combined with force and compression of either air or heat.

As this is done, the metal begins to form into the same shape as the mandrel to create the desired design. Many will also consider reducing as a main procedure, which includes this procedure, but pieces together different geometrical forms for more complex designs.

The procedure that is used for metal spinning not only applies to the basic processes, but also allows several to move into complex designs that are based on this procedure. Since spinning is typically used by artisans, architects or for complex structures, other experiments have been combined with the procedure.

For instance, many will experiment with the amount of heat and pressure that is applied to the spinning. The result is a difference in the thickness of the metal, as well as the overall formation and texture of the piece. Others have added in extra tools for the finish or for the spinning process, which will create designs, ornamentation and cuts in the metal.

If you are looking into metal spinning, you will not only want to consider the processes and the experimentation for design. The process that is used allows individuals to use different types of metal. The most common types used are aluminum and sheet metal, both which have different effects from the thickness and the process used. However, it is also possible to use other solid materials through this procedure to create alternative results for the metal.

The different processes used to form metals allow different artisans and commercial areas to have specific looks. The metal spinning that is used is a main procedure used for more ornate looks that are a part of metals. The result of this procedure is the ability to have an alternative look through metal, while creating a more complex look through a stable material.

When beginning to look into metal bending, you will notice that there are several expected results from the procedures that are used. Different types of bending are divided according to the shape that you need with the metal. The most common types of bends are the V – shape, U – shape or channel shape. The other differences in the bends will depend on the length of the metal that is needed as well as the specific area that the metal will be used in. For instance, if the metal is going to be used for an air duct, it will need a different type of bend from the use of an automobile part.

The common shapes that are used with metal bending then move into several processes to make the correct design. Each of these is designed to create the right shapes of the metal while providing a convenient fit for different needs. One of the common types is known as the three point bend, which will fold the metal in several different places. Rotary bending and folding are other common procedures, each which are developed to create specific width, designs and measurements for different areas.

To formulate the type of metal bending that is used, manufacturers will use specific equations that determine the results of the metal. The processes used will begin with a determination of the thickness of the material. If the metal is thicker, then processes with more compression and air may be used.

There are also factors such as how much allowance can be used for the metal as well as what the deduction is for the metal. The angle in degrees will also be measured in relation to this. All of the metal bending will then fit together into a process that combines air compression and pressure to make the right look to the material.

The procedures and types of metal bending that are used by manufacturers create a different set of materials that can be used in various processes. After metal has been bent to the right shape, it will lead to a different set of uses. The result will be sturdy parts used for transportation, buildings and other areas that require extra support through the use of metal.

The first processes that are used for sheet metal forming are based on different cuts. Deep drawing, for instance, will use several steps to move deeply into the metal and to create an alternative shape. Regular cutting can also be done for thinner metal and will provide repetitive shapes that are more conducive to different types of parts. Another process used is perforating, which includes cuts that form small holes through flat sheet metal. Each of these alternatives can provide a different shape and cut to the metal you are using.

Another procedure used for forming is based on the concept of stamping. The main function that is a part of this is based on creating a shape, bend or wave in the metal without any cuts. The result will be a fit into another part or a different shape that can be used with the metal. A specific type of stamping used is known as press brake forming, which bends a series of long metal sheets then moves them into a groove that fits into a specific area. Rolling may also be used, which consists of several types of bends that are added into the sheet metal to create a longer amount of sheet metal.

The different formations that are used with forming then move into alternative processes and procedures that change the quality of the metal. Many manufacturers have found that the degree of the heat, amount of air and pressure used, as well as the force that is created will alter the different parts of the metal. Doing this creates a different approach and alternative to the sheet metal and will provide a specific cut and shape that can be used for different materials.

The main concepts that apply to forming can help to create specific parts and shapes. The designs that are used are based on cutting and stamping the metal so it can be processed for different needs. The various methods not only include these specific components, but also move into detailed processes that help with the right formation of different pieces. The result is the ability to use customized sheet metal for any project or part.

Different pieces of material are known for their effectiveness when manufacturing parts or projects. If you are working with different materials, then you want to make sure that it has stability to help with the efficiency of building. Working with sheet metal as one of the stable materials for any project is one of the common approaches that are taken. For this to work efficiently; however, you will need to understand sheet metal stamping and the way that it works with the manufacturing process. There are different steps and options that are used for this, all which will change the way that sheet metal can be used.

The main concept is to have a machine or to use a procedure that presses the metal into the right shape. There are several types of stamping that are used, all which will have different effects on the metal and the results that you get. Shaping the metal through bends, embossing, coining, piercing or blanking are some of the common shapes that are used for sheet metal. Each of the types of stamping used will have different procedures that are combined with the main material to create the right results and to shape the metal in the most efficient manner.

When you begin to work with sheet metal stamping, you will notice that there are different procedures used, dependent on the shapes that you want to create. In some instances, the stamping will take place through a machine that automatically changes the shape of the metal with one stamp. In other instances, there are several steps that have to be used, all which will continue to redefine the metal into the right shape and which will create a different and more complex result for the material.

The most recent development that is used with sheet metal stamping is known as a simulation. This is a technology that has been created to make sure that the manufacturing of the metal comes out with specific shapes, while providing a sense of consistency to the shapes that are created. The technology that is used combines different elements that work with the metal to automatically change the formation of the metal while protecting dysfunctions that would occur from the metal when used with alternative procedures.

Whether you are working on automotive parts or need sheet metal for a specific project, is the ability to refine the material that you need. The process of sheet metal stamping is one of the common approaches to changing and shaping metal so it can help you with any project. The manufacturing, design and use of this material then becomes easier to use and provides you with the right fit while you are working on different parts and projects.

Metal forging is a process that allows you to refine and change the shape of metal, specifically for different projects and parts made out of this material. If you are working with this specific technique, then you will want to understand how different techniques are used. The ability to craft metal into a different form can help you to create the right part while providing you with a stronger foundation to the materials that you are using for a specific project. The different applications that are a part of this will help you to get the results desired for your various projects.

Metal forging is a process that changes and alters the grain structure and properties of metal. The ability to do this begins with heating the metal through a compressive force. Different tools and procedures are used for heating, typically which is combined with a hammer or press to create a specific shape. For the process of metal forging to work effectively, you will not only need to use these specific tools, but will need to change the shape of the metal by working with smaller pieces that you can add into one larger structure. By doing this, you create a stronger surface and will eliminate gaps in the metal.

There are three main types of the metal forging process that are used for those that need to shape and design metal. The first is known as drawing out the metal. In this process, you will increase the length of the piece of metal that you are using and will take the cross – section, or center of the metal, and will decrease it. The second process is known as upsetting the metal. This is opposite of the first process, in which you decrease the length and increase the center of metal. You can also use a squeezing procedure, which allows you to change both the length and the cross – section in the same direction.

When you begin to use these three different procedures for metal forging, you will not only combine the main increase and decrease of length and the cross section. Each of the smaller pieces of metal that you begin to work with will need to fit with the other pieces to make the overall shape and part of the piece. To become efficient at metal forging, you will need to find a way to work with the right measurements of increasing and decreasing the metal. This will be followed by finishing the operations to piece the metal together and to take out potential defects from the metal.

The procedure of metal forging is one that can help you to make different parts and projects. If you are beginning to learn how to do this, then you want to make sure that you use the correct procedures for the metal. You will also want to learn how to piece together the metal to create a project that functions efficiently for your different needs.
